nnyyxxbot
Hey there! If you're seeing this, you probably spotted nnyyxxbot in your server logs.
What it does
When someone shares a link on nnyyxx, nnyyxxbot swings by to grab a preview: the page title, description, and thumbnail. In some cases it also picks up embed data (oEmbed) so rich content like videos and music players can show up inline.
How it works
- Fetches are always triggered by a real person sharing or viewing a link on nnyyxx.
- It may occasionally re-fetch a page to keep preview info fresh.
- It only reads the HTML of the page. It doesn't submit forms, run JavaScript, or crawl beyond the single URL.
Identifying nnyyxxbot
It identifies itself with the user-agent string:
nnyyxxbot/1.0 (link-previews+embeds; always user-driven; nyx.now/bot)
It used to be called NyxBot. Rules you wrote for that name still count: the bot honors both names, and a rule for either one applies.
Opting in
If your robots.txt blocks crawlers by default, you can allow nnyyxxbot specifically:
User-agent: nnyyxxbot Allow: /
Opting out
nnyyxxbot respects robots.txt when crawling links users post. To opt out, add this to yours:
User-agent: nnyyxxbot Disallow: /
We fetch your robots.txt the first time someone shares a link
from your site. After that, we re-check it roughly once a day, but only
when someone actually shares or views a link from your domain we have not re-checked in a long time. If nobody
is sharing or viewing your links, we won't bother re-fetching. If your
robots.txt is missing or we can't reach it, we assume we're welcome.
Note: If you provide a publicly documented oEmbed endpoint, we bypass checking robots.txt to make requests in most cases.
If you'd like to block nnyyxxbot, we completely understand. We're just here to make your content look its best in previews.
